Grow Plants Year-Round With DIY Hydroponics

Gardening has always been healing for me.

I grew up surrounded by gardens — and it inspired me to always bring nature with me, no matter where I went.

As a kid, I grew up on a corn farm. I tended to the field as best I could, but my usual chores included taking care of our gardens.

By the age of 10 I was a professional weed killer and the designated waterer. I loved watching my plants grow! I find it soothing to know you’re helping something flourish. Watching a seed bloom takes more than just weeding and water…. There’s a bit of magic to it.

Growing up, my favorite part was always harvesting the corn.

And today that’s still true — I love my daily harvest. I walk through my garden and pick all the produce I need for the day’s cooking.

The biggest transition from moving to the city was the lack of space and light for gardens. There just wasn’t an option to grow plants on my balcony and I couldn’t lose an entire room for plants!

Instead of giving up, I went on a journey.

I needed gardening in my life and I wasn’t going to let this roadblock stop me.

And that’s when I came across hydroponics…

What is Hydroponic Gardening?

Simply, hydroponics is gardening with water, not soil. It’s like a nutritious bath for your plants!

While this kind of gardening is primarily used in industrial settings, there are many ways to make it accessible for at-home use. If you can garden indoors with soil, why can’t you do it with water?

That’s what lit my hydroponics journey — a desire to sustainably grow food at home WITH limited resources.

I began experimenting with different water infusions, solutions, and growing mediums (soil substitutes). My apartment looked like a lab with small jars everywhere! Each one held water and a tiny sprout. My kids helped out, wearing their Dad’s white dress shirts as lab coats! They say they want to be ‘plant scientists’ now.

I found most starter set-ups were far too expensive or big for me. I was only willing to use a corner of my apartment for the entire operation. And some of the pre-made systems cost over $2,000! They were just not affordable or accessible to someone like me.

And because I knew I wasn’t the only one, I decided to write a book. A book about sustainable gardening at home!

That’s right! I wrote an entire book because it shouldn’t be this hard to grow your own food! Gosh, they literally did it less than 100 years ago, so why can’t we?

The Benefits of Hydroponics

One of the biggest reasons hydroponics has become so popular is because recent studies on hydroponic farming have shown it to have many benefits.

Plants grown hydroponically are of exceedingly high quality, occupy less space, and consume fewer resources than traditional growing methods. Hydroponic techniques also make it easy to grow large amounts of vegetables in small spaces or even indoors.

Plus, you can grow food ALL year. There are no ‘growing seasons’ with hydroponics! You can start whenever you want and harvest whenever you want.

Hydroponics:

  • Use 10 times less water
  • Take up less space
  • Offer up to 25% higher yields
  • Can grow locally
  • Reduce your carbon footprint
  • Do not use GMOs or pesticides

DIY Hydroponics

Hydroponic systems don’t have to cost much… or anything at all. Intrigued?

Well after using up all my glass jars, I turned to trash. I used old 1L soda bottles to create a make-shift hydroponic system! It was completely free (I even used seeds I harvested from my parents’ garden).

I also made other systems using an old tupperware container and some PVC pipes. I loved creating my own set-ups, but I really loved reusing old junk that has been tossed aside.

Did you know you can grow plants with water and a jar? Before I began my research I never thought I could grow without soil! Know I’m a hydroponic pro — and I use a little more than just a jar now. But what I’m trying to say is that you can start minimally and expand as your plants do.

My girlfriends love to come over and see my garden. They think it is completely mind-blowing what I’ve done with common household objects like soda bottles, fish tank covers, and PVC pipes.

DIY projects are also great for the family! My kids love getting involved and my husband is always looking for something new to tinker with. Plus, I think my kids have learned more from these systems than they have from their schooling!

There are just so many benefits to at-home hydroponic gardening!

Now I’m sure you’re wondering…

How Can You Get Started?

Well, that’s where my book comes in!

I don’t expect you to go through all the trouble I did. After many experiments — some failed, some succeeded. And those successes led to my book: Year-Round Gardening with Hydroponics.

With 176 pages and clear how-to guides, you’ll be a pro in no time! I even included thrifty garden hacks, a history of hydroponics, and how this kind of growing can help slow climate change.

I’ve been growing food for my entire family for well over 20 years! When I moved to the city, my limited resources challenged my experience and skill. But over the last 2 years I have returned to supporting my family with home-grown produce right from my own apartment.

I believe there are hard times now and ahead and having your own access to a healthy, controlled, food source is more important than ever.

As anyone that’s been to a grocery store knows… it’s hard to find non-GMO foods. So much food goes unlabeled, you don’t know what you’re going to get. And the non-GMO food labels mean that the seller charges you 5 times what the food is worth. Like me, I don’t doubt you feel robbed every time you pay for organic foods.

And this is where growing your own food comes into play. By doing so, you have access to organic, non-GMO and pesticide-free foods without having to pay excess amounts of money.

When I said gardening has always been healing for me, I meant it! The fresh air from the plants clears my mind and relaxes me.

But it also has physically healing properties: Once you start eating from your own garden, the health benefits are too noticeable to ignore. My skin cleared up, my brain fog was gone, and I felt energized. It’s amazing how medicinal food can be!

After sharing my how-to guide with my girlfriends, they pushed me to make it public! And with the way the world currently is, I think we all deserve a chance to build our own indoor gardens. Anyone can support their family, it just takes a bit of imagination and the right advice.

Well, thanks to my friends and many others, this book is now accessible to everyone!
